“Jovan Jovanović Zmaj” primary school in Kanjiža is situated in the Municipality of Kanjiža. The Municipality of Kanjiža is in the northernmost part of Serbia. The municipality covers the area of 399m2. The population according to the last census is 25 000. The largest primary school in the municipality of Kanjiža is “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj”.
It is one of three independent schools in the municipality. Teaching is conducted in five buildings: in Kanjiža, in Zmaj and Ada buildings, and in the villages Martonoš, Adorjan and Velebit. In the school year 2015/2016, 1046 pupils were enrolled in the school, in all the five facilities.
Zmaj building represents the central school. In this more than a century old building, there used to be a girls’ nursery, a primary and a public school, and since mid-20th century it has operated as “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj“ primary school. In the building, 324 pupils attend classes with the Hungarian language as the language of instructions, in both lower and upper grades, while 62 pupils attend upper grade classes with the Serbian language as the language of instructions.
The former independent school "Endre Ady" became a part of the "Jovan Jovanović Zmaj" primary school, through an integration. In this facility, 358 pupils are taught in the Hungarian language, and they are placed in grades 1 to 8, while 64 pupils, placed in grades 1 to 4 are taught in the Serbian language. There are also special classes in this building, and 55 pupils with special needs learn in eleven classes. In the past, the purpose of the school building in Martonoš was also to serve as a girls’ nursery. In the building, a language of instruction is Hungarian for grades one to eight, and there are currently 125 pupils.
In Adorjan, as well, language of instruction is Hungarian. In the modern separate facility, there are 55 pupils in lower grade classes.
In Velebit, there are 6 pupils in a mixed age class with Serbian as the language of instruction.
Pupils from Velebit and Adorjan continue their schooling in Kanjiža, after they complete the fourth grade.
